Kishu Sumi Ink Stick
KISHU SUMI is a rare and revered ink stick, composed of 100% pine soot and Nikawa glue. It yields a clear, yet strikingly thick sumi color that is highly prized for its beautiful ink bleeding and deep tonal range.
Historically, the Kii Kumano region, with its deep mountains and ancient pine forests, was renowned for its high-quality pine soot. During the Edo Period, the pine-soot sumi ink from this area held a great reputation. It was even supported by Shogun Yoshimune of the Kii Tokugawa family, earning recognition as the shogunate's official Sumi ink.
Today, the tradition is revived by Mr. Horiike, the sole artisan in Japan who still produces pine soot using the traditional Shoji Daki Way in the region. He crafts this historic ink, known today as KISHU SUMI.
This premium ink is cherished by a wide range of artists, from calligraphers to professional Suibokuga (ink painting) artists.
