Rie Takeda Biography 2026
Calligrapher / Artist
Rie Takeda has worked as a professional calligrapher, artist and educator for more than 20 years.
She started practicing calligraphy at the age of five under the supervision of her grandmother. Later she completed the master of the Gayu calligraphy school in Japan. She also trained her Sumie ink painting skill in the Okino school.
Rie’s been teaching Shodo, the art of Japanese calligraphy for more than 20 years and she’s been teaching her own mindfulness-based approach to Shodo for over 15 years. Her students and fellow teachers come from very diverse backgrounds, different age groups and locations worldwide.
Rie produces calligraphy works, Painted Poem series, collages, print designs and works on Body-Art. She also continuously is involved in various artistic projects and collaborations– both in Europe and Japan, including creating a clothing line for John Lewis, creating a brand logo for Sega and running the popular online Domestika course "Shodo: Introduction to Japanese Calligraphy". Her book ‘Shodo, the practice of mindfulness through the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy’ has been listed 2023 in Creative Book Awards.
