Fumiyo Yoshikawa Biography 2026
Artist/Instructor
Fumiyo Yoshikawa is an internationally recognized artist and instructor specializing in Japanese Sumi-e, Japanese calligraphy, and Nihonga. Born in Kyoto and immersed from an early age in its classical craft traditions, she earned her degree in Japanese painting from Kyoto University of Education and trained under revered masters of the Shijo Maruyama School.
Her work—ranging from intimate Shikishi board studies to large-scale installations—has earned top honors from prestigious institutions such as Nitten and the Sumi-e Society of America. In her classes and workshops, Fumiyo guides students through the core philosophy of traditional brush arts: spontaneity, controlled breath, and the decisive, irreversible stroke.
Drawing on decades of disciplined study and global artistic dialogue across Japan, North America, and Central America, she introduces learners to historical methods, Zen principles, and the expressive handling of Sumi ink, mineral pigments, and Kozo paper.
Whether teaching foundational calligraphy or advanced Nihonga layering techniques, Fumiyo offers hands-on instruction tailored to all experience levels. Students learn not only classical technique and material craftsmanship, but also how to cultivate presence and find their own creative voice through the spirit of Japanese brushwork.
-
To be an artist is to be honest with oneself.
To be sincere.
To observe the world with an open mind, free of prejudice—to learn from it, to feel it deeply.
To seek truth within it.
To discover beauty within it.
Even in the harshest and most difficult circumstances, there is beauty to be found.
To recognize it. To feel it.
To cultivate the ability to transform what is seen and felt into art.
To connect with the world through one’s work.
And through that work, to give something back to the world.
