  • Fude (Brush)

    • Recommendation: Yasutomo Wa Fude Calligraphy Brush (WF2).

  • Sumi (Ink Stick)

    • Recommendation: Taihou Ink Stick.

    • Note: We utilize the traditional method of grinding ink; liquid ink is not used for this course.

  • Suzuri (Ink Stone)

    • Recommendation: Yasutomo Natural Suzuri Stone

  • Hanshi (Japanese Rice Paper)

    • Recommendation: Japanese Calligraphy Paper (80–100 sheets).

Storage & Organization

  • Fudemaki (Bamboo Brush Roll)

    • Purpose: A bamboo roll-up mat used for protecting and carrying brushes. (Approx $12.00)

  • Fude Oki (Brush Rest)

    • Purpose: Keeps your brush elevated to prevent ink from touching the table. 

    • Recommendation: Any small rest—chopstick holders are a popular and creative choice.

    • Recommendation: MEGREZ Metal Calligraphy Paperweight (Iron).

  • Shitajiki (Felt Mat)

    • Specifications: A black felt mat, ideally 9 x 13 inches.
